Aww, man, I thought this was going to be a reminiscence piece about you and Iceberg Slim.
Sooo ... if you HAD hung out with Iceberg Slim, what songs would you have listened to?

"I had only eaten one pack of Saltines in three days..."

Makes me feel affluent living on Cracker Jack and Ketchup soup for a week.

Fun blog. --Janet

I had a nice long entry ready for this - but for some reason - at work - I can read the site but not open the silly comments window. ANYWAY...it was all about "Billy Don't Be A Hero," and "The Night Chicago Died," which take me back unerringly to George Papadopolous' Greek Restaurant in Charleston, IL - where I had my first paying job at $1.25 an hour, plus more extra soup than the family could eat.

Confirmed: songs are photographs for the ears. Yeah, Wayne, I've been...er, singing that tune for years, wondering if anyone else found their life as indexed to songs as I find mine. Probably everyone does to some extent, but it seems like certain sounds just flood my soul with tones and atmospheres straight out of memory. Maybe that's why going through the end of a 23-year marriage I went out and bought a $3K T-sax, having never played a note on a horn before. One of the best investments I ever made. As for consciously putting music in books, confirmed again. Used all of the Eagles "Desperado" in a novel -- really, Glenn Frey and Don Henley gave me permission to use the entire song for free. This after going to the mat with Michelle Legrande and Roger Miller in two other instances when I wanted to use a mere phrase. Legrande and Miller (their holding companies actually) held me up for a king's ransom. And the freebie was the start of a cherished friendship with Glenn Frey. So the muses get tangled up between songs and stories, Wayne. Funny, but I think it's stronger for audio than -- say -- the memories evoked by visuals, even though they say we learn 75% through our eyes.
