I had the advantage that when I decided to write it I was in the middle of the ocean on a ship...I had from 4:30 to midnight every day with nothing else TO do...unless you wanted to watch "Barnyard Follies" with the boys for the billionth time :)

Thanks for the comments, one and all.
> I knew (I think) that it was a novel that I wasn't ready to write...when I was ready, it took 21 days to complete it
Oh sure, rub it in, why don’t you… :-)
> Thanks for putting some heart, soul, blood, and shit into that.
Not too much of the latter, I hope.
> I think I solved the problem it highlights. I write in the dark.
Makes perfect sense. I've always sensed you're an illuminating guy, Sully.

We all write in the dark, Sullyman, because we live in darkness, seeking the light. Ever seeking the light. Wonderful essay Brian.

Interesting metaphor, good buddy. I think I solved the problem it highlights. I write in the dark. Wait a minute...I didn't say that!

Love your telling of the journey, Brian. Poignant, dare I say, wise. Thanks for putting some heart, soul, blood, and shit into that. It worked.

Changes can be harrowing and are often frustrating, but they can provide critical material with which to build the next step upward.
Thank you for the neat metaphoric comparison and for sharing your thoughts along the way.

I read these, and never know if I've exactly gotten the sense of what others feel when they write them...but I know what they remind ME of, what gets dragged up.

I had an idea as a very young man about a story I wanted to write. I waited and worried at that things for YEARS before writing it in a flurry. It was the novelette "A Candle Lit in Sunlight," that was published in STARSHORE (my first really big sale) and reprinted in YBH XIX by Karl Wagner...and STILL it wouldn't let go. I knew (I think) that it was a novel that I wasn't ready to write...when I was ready, it took 21 days to complete it...

Just...different. I get that...
